Watchmen Drum & Bugle Corps (est. 2013) began in the summer of 2013 under the direction of Raymond Moreno – one of the founding members and the first executive director of the corps – as a DCI International Sound Sport Performing Ensemble.
His vision, along with several local band directors and instructors, was to establish an environment for local high school and college musicians that would provide an opportunity to compete during the summer at a low cost, learn from seasoned educators in the activity, and still earn a taste of the entire drum corps experience.
For the 2015 Indoor Percussion season, Watchmen Drum & Bugle Corps debuted it’s Independent Open Indoor Percussion Ensemble with their program, “The Quiet Things That No One Knows”, earning the group the 2015 SCPA PIO Silver Medal and the 2015 ADLA PIW Gold Medal.
In 2015, Assistant Corps Director & Battery Caption Head, David Becker, took on the role of Executive Director, carrying the torch forward in order to continue to shape and mold the corps’ identity and mission statement through the means of education – above all else – assembling a team of staff members that utilize contemporary, as well as traditional, teaching & design methods proven to help individuals grow as performers, as well as members of society.
2015 also marked the corps first year as a competitive DCI Open Class ensemble. Their program, “Passion & Perseverance”, earned the corps a 5th place finish at the DCI Southern California Open Class Championships – a considerable feat for a young ensemble whose entire music & visual package was learned two weeks prior to the first show of their competitive season.
Watchmen Arts Associations prides itself on providing local musicians an affordable year-round experience that is educational, and teaches members to challenge and grow as individuals, along with the rest of their peers, while competing against the best and being evaluated by the finest judges in the activity – all resulting in shaping individuals who understand the value of working towards something bigger than themselves.
